In 2004, Edge Zones published its first book, Miami Now. Subsequent publications include Wet, in 2005 and Wet 2, in 2006, all documenting Miami’s rapidly expanding, pluralistic contemporary art culture. The absence of existing contemporary art publications in Miami prompted our book's publication. Despite our limited funds these publications have served as a catalyst for the growing number of other publications about art in Miami. Edge Zones’ books feature a range of emerging and established local and regional artists, bridging the gap between them and creating a platform for international recognition and discourse. Edge Zones aims to make contemporary art accessible and engaging while creating a focal point for international research and awareness.
Our publications, more than for reporting, have been a fundamental vehicle for disseminating art, serving as a venue for a ‘containing’ space for intervention and debate, an alternative to the museum, the gallery, or other representation spaces, in which the publisher becomes a producer, a curator, seeking out an audience able to fill in the discourse by taking the book home. Edge Zones has been publishing a total of 4 large full color 100-300 pages books of the work of their exhibiting artist. We are in the middle of producing two new books. Our web site serves as a forum where major cultural issues are made accessible to a broad-based audience.
Edge Zones is a Miami artist run centre established in 2003. Edge Zones and Edge Zones Press presents contemporary practices, innovative publications, book works, editions, talks, and events that encourage dialogue between visual art and writing. Past publications include the works of artists and writers such as Rita Indiana Hernandez, Anthony Goicolea, Elisa Turner, Aldo Menendez, Eduard Reboll, Jose Antonio Evora, Amable Lopez Melendez, Edouard Duval Carrie, Herve Di Rosa, Diana de Solares,Rene Francisco, Pedro Vizcaino, Ana Albertina Delgado, Carlos Quintana, Rigoberto Quintana, Michelle Weinberge, Lynne Gelfman, Kika Karadi, Clemencia Labin, Edward Levine, Carlos Luna, Cesar Trasobares, Robert Huff and more.
Edge Zones is committed to assisting local and regional artists from diverse social-economic and cultural backgrounds with their creative production by providing opportunities for dissemination in a wide range of national and international forums. Our aim is to reveal certain aspects of art in Miami. They stem from the attitude that is not about finding results but rather processes, dynamics and rhythms that are manifested within the marginal, the enduring as well as in the unpredictable that coexist within us in the everyday life.
To our neighboring islands and countries, Miami is the gateway to the United States. The resulting pluralistic culture is what sustains Miami’s prominence as a dynamic art capital.
